Tumwater is a small town in Washington state located at the junction of Interstate 5 and State Route 99. As of the 2010 census, its population was 8,834. The name "Tumwater" is an ode to the sound of rushing water and has been applied to other places including Tumwater Falls and Tumwater Lake. The first Europeans to visit what is now Tumwater were fur traders who journeyed up the Snake River in 1817-18. They named the falls after nearby Mount Rainier, which they saw from their ship anchored on Puget Sound. When Congress created Washington as a state in 1889, it included all of what is nowWashington County except for part of what are today Thurston and Kitsap counties. To ensure that this area would not become part of Tacoma, then a neighboring city with large German-American populations, lawmakers created Tumwater as its county seat with land surrounding present day Tumwater Falls being given to Tacoma in exchange. In 1907, voters passed an ordinance authorizing the establishment of schools within unincorporated areas adjacent to Spokane County so that these children could have access to public education without leaving their homes. Still, many people living near Spokane City felt left out when school districts were established near them rather than their homes. In 1916 passage by Congress alternative plans were put into effect which provided for agrarian schools within unincorporated areas; however such programs continued only until 1949 when they were completely discontinued statewide due to budgetary constraints. The post office at Tumwater was established on October 12, 1876 under tin plates reading "TUMWATER". It had six mail boxes before it merged with Superior on November 1st 1975 (which had three). On July 20th 1898 first trucks arrived at the new Post Office Annex #2 just north of town limits delivering mail between Olympia and Seattle; it served as both Post Offices until May 2nd 1951 when both got moved south across I-5 opposite CenturyLink Field; back east where they currently stand former box number one still carries mail from time to time but no longer has internet access or phone service inside! After hours long deliberations by postmaster General Noble Payne a decision was made that the annex be abandoned because there was no need for it since most people outside town used either University Avenue or US Highway 95 instead which led directly into Downtown Redmond if you wanted email updates about what's going on outside your house! local reporters also used this annex during prohibition because getting permission from federal officials wasn't easy so if you needed something like cigarettes or alcohol you could pretty much get it right up until law enforcement showed up...or maybe not? Anyway after five years of consideration decided against preserving it any further because money collected during those days went towards more important things like building roads and bridges today! The annex sat vacant until 1978 when groundbreaking began for housing development called The Ridge at Stadium Square; however due to high water levels around Stadium Square property became flooded making demolition almost impossible so eventually roofing over the old post office garage ceased operations in 2000 allowing us current residents access inside once again! Of course we're not allowed inside anymore but we can still watch from our windows through closed door!]

Today, most people living in or near downtown Tumwater consider themselves lifelong residents or visitors only - there is no official census count conducted in this small town anymore. In recent years, aspects like retail shopping along First Avenue South have drawn large numbers of tourists from western Washington - many locals refer to this area simply as "Downtown" despite efforts by commercial interests to rename it something more marketable such as "Seattle Center". Despite these attractions, Downtownemployment levels remain low relative to other parts of the town due largely to its isolation (most people who work here are commuters). Despite this disadvantage however, Downtown businesses continue to generate considerable tax revenue for their local government counterparts. A numberof historic buildings dating back to before Western Washington's establishment as a state are located within Downtown; these include Volunteer Fire Department No 1 built 1892 emergency station now used for office space by Kitsap County sheriff's office; former UW campus bookstore & administrative offices building constructed 1911 now home to Northwest School District administration offices; former Masonic Temple Building erected 1889 now home to Tacoma Masonic Lodge #5
