Gun targets have been a part of Tumwater, Washington’s history for many years. The first target was created in 1876 by a group of men who were working on the new Tumwater Iron Works. The targets were made from an old wood frame that had to be cut down and then shaped into the required size. They were used to shoot at rabbits and other small animals. In 1907, the first real gun range was opened in Tumwater by J.B. Petty and his partners. They used their own land and hired local people to make the targets. At that time, there were only five guns available in Tumwater, but they became popular because they could be shot accurately at distances up to 100 yards. The first indoor target range was opened in 1954 by Jens Krogstad and his son John Prentice Krogstad III. It was located on State Route 206 north of town near Hwy 97E It proved very successful and later became known as the “Krogstad Range” In 1978, firebrand NRA member Edwin Howell bought the property adjacent to the Krogstad Range and began using it as his own personal target practice ground He soon realized that he had something special when he started seeing patterns emerge on some of his targets which he attributed to air resistance caused by trees lining the nearby stream bed . He soon realized that this phenomenon could also be utilized for practical purposes such as creating realistic looking backgrounds for photographs or art projects In 1984, Mr. Howell donated all of his property including both ranges back to the City of Tumwater This allowed city-owned land adjacent to both ranges back into private hands once again so citizens could use them again without having to worry about obstruction or theft By doing this, we helped preserve our history while also providing access for everyone in town

Tumwater is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Tumwater has been inhabited by indigenous people for centuries and was first settled by colonists in 1851. The town was incorporated in 1876. The first post office in Tumwater was established on July 1, 1851, and remained open until it closed on December 31, 1912. There were also two stores and one hotel located in Tumwater at this time. The present day downtown area of Tumwater was built up around a large mill which operated from 1865 to 1955. One of the most important aspects of the early history of this community were its three churches- First Christian Church (1855), Second Presbyterian Church (1868), and Third Methodist Episcopal Church (1875). These churches played an important role in developing social life and support for local businesses during the early years of TumWater growth. In addition to these religious institutions, there were several schools which served as homes for students during those early days: Yesler School (1856), Central High School (1871–72), Wesleyan Female Seminary (1881), Masonic Lodge No 2 erected shed 1896-97) The heyday of the logging industry came about during World War II when many Boeing plants were set up along the Puget Sound waterfronts adjacent to Tacoma . Many jobs went to Japanese Americans who had been interned during World War II; however, they did not have voting rights until after Japan's surrender in 1945 On September 5th 1950 Historic District nomination forms being filed with King County hearkened back to pioneer days with 3 requests that lumber mills be preserved including request #1 "That all buildings associated with any kind of logging or sawing operations be preserved" #2 "All structures associated with any type of transportation such as railways or steamboats used whilelogging or sawing operations took place" #3 "All structures associated with any kind of agricultural production such as barns or silos used whilelogging or sawing operations took place." All three nominations are still standing today! In 1951 Tacoma’s Mayor Jens Petersen submitted a proposal for incorporation into King County asking for help from county commissioners with annexations possible due to population growth without proper zoning control . After much discussion resulting in no action from commissioners Petersen offered his plan again proposing annexation but this time requesting unanimous consent from all Commissioners before submitting On October 15th 1951 after over two months delay Commissioners finally approved joining Tacoma into King County making it America’s second largest city just behind Los Angeles
The city of Tumwater was founded in 1854 by iterations of the Chelan and Wenatchee people, who were looking for a site to build their new village. The first permanent residents arrived in 1855, and the city grew rapidly. In 1865, the United States government purchased the land from the tribe for $10 per acre. Washington Territory was created from parts of Oregon and Idaho on January 3, 1861, and Tumwater became part of that territory. On February 12, 1886, Daughters of the American Revolution erected a monument to local heroes at corner of Main Street and Second Avenue.
