The new county courthouse had been designed by architects Charles Bulfinch and Arthur Rankin and cost $2 million to build; however due to funding constraints it was not completed until 1922 and only served as a courtroom for a few months before being sold to the University of Washington for use as their main library building from 1923-1927. In 1951–1953 during America's involvement in World War II USS Pascagoula (LPH-4) lay at anchor off shore nearpresent day Tumwater pier while Tacoma Lighthouse Authority operated Tacoma lighthouse which had been abandoned since 1906 due to vandalism by local children who broke down two light towers that summer! During this time many small businesses located along Puget Sound waterfront moved out onto land now within city limits including Alki Fish Market & Bulk Grading Co., formerly known as Nugget Nuts Incorporated (founded 1901), WSU Boat Shop (founded 1918), Pierette’s Bakery & Pizza Place (founder 1919), Blanchard’s Ice Cream Parlor (established 1924), several motion picture studios filming sound stages here such as Columbia Pictures’ “Journey Into Space” also set ashore including units used by Republic Studios lot #2(now Hansen Landing) Geico Insurance Building erected 1927 burned down in 2006 but has since been rebuilt with Perdue seafoodindalette taking over business assets same architect designed 1935 original geico building can be found today on Harbor Way just east of Safeco Field development home plate/batting cage once occupied by Seattle Mariners baseball team moved to Safeco Field from adjacent land in 2001 former homeplate/batting cage now occupied by Boeing hangar

The Town of Tumwater was founded in 1871 by farmers from Tacoma and Olympia. The town was named for the tupelo tree that grows in the region. In 1902, Tumwater annexed the City of Gig Harbor to its north and then annexed more cities until it had a total population of 20,000 people. In 1959, King County voters passed an ordinance annexing unincorporated areas of Port Orchard to form King County Annexation District No. 1 with a population of 10,000 people. This caused uproar among residents who felt they had been taken advantage of by county officials. A referendum later that year placed annexation on indefinite hold due to public concerns about future growth without proper planning or boundaries in place. In May 2000, voters approved an initiative to create Tumwater Township which would have included all but 2 percent (of its current population) within city limits as well as developing some land adjacent to downtown for parkland and other uses including housing development and retail stores near Interstate 5th Avenue N/A
The city of Tumwater was first settled in 1792. It was founded on the land that is now the east side of Puget Sound. The town grew quickly, and by 1856 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1907, Tumwater became the county seat of King County.
