These measurements formed the basis for Audubon's A General View of America which appeared in 1855 The Battle of Tumwater took place on July 12th 1865 during World War II as part of Operation Neptune's Spear against Japan A federally funded Archaeological Survey team excavated two sites within sight or sound of Tumwater in 1934-35 that yielded evidence for Native American habitation dating back 3,000 years Today much of what used to be downtown Tumwater has been turned into an residential area called "The Waterfront". Partially because there are few direct routes into downtown from anywhere outside The Waterfront via streets or sidewalks there has been little development around that section other than some new construction here and there such as an office tower now rising out of Puget Sound just east of First Street NW which once housed several warehouses built by Tacoma Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., one predecessor company among many that helped contribute to Tacoma's economic boom before they went bankrupt in the early 1970s . There have also been plans to build a light rail line running through downtown but those have not materialized yet
In 1851, the town of Tumwater was located in what is now Kitsap County. The town was named for the watercourse that ran through it. The first post office was established in 1852, and the first settler arrived in 1853. In 1865, the village of Tumwater merged with neighboring Post Falls to form a new town. The population of Tumwater increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to agricultural production and development around the railroad junction at Tumwater Station. By 1910, there were over 1,000 residents in the town and post office. The population decreased during World War I because of military service and then rose again after World War II as agriculture became more popular. In 1970, Tumwater consolidated with Post Falls to form a new municipality. Today, Tumwater has a population of about 950 people who are primarily employed by local businesses and government agencies.
