In 1907 a local electric company built a power plant on the shoreline of Lake Union for powering Tacoma and Bellevue during heavy rains; it became operational known as the Tacoma Electric Company Power Plant (later renamed Seattle Municipal Light & Power). When that company went bankrupt in 1929 and its assets were sold off to various other businesses and individuals within three years of its closure, most notably Western Electric Corporation (now Comcast), much of Tumwater's remaining infrastructure was lost as well - including water systems for many small towns located east of I-5 along State Route 908/Lake Union Boulevard between Ballard and SeaTac Airport.
