Tumwater is a small town in Washington state, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Thurston County. The town was founded by settlers in 1853 and named for the Tumwater River which surrounded it at that time. The first post office was established in 1855, and the first store was built in 1860. In 1870, a schoolhouse and Methodist church were also built. By 1910, when the population reached 1,531 people, Tumwater had become an agricultural center with several businesses providing services such as agriculture, fishing, forestry and shipping. In 1932-1933, Tumwater hosted the world's first airmail service between Seattle and Spokane using Boeing 707s operated by American Airlines. After World War II ended, many farmers abandoned their land to become factory workers or move to other cities; however, some still managed to keep their farms viable through irrigation systems and crop rotation techniques. This continued until around 1990 when fertilizer prices went up dramatically and many farmers began to sell their land off to developers; this led to a decline in production on individual farms that has not been reversed since then. With only 2 percent of its original acreage remaining within town limits (compared to an average of over 60 percent within Thurston County), much of what remains of Tumwater's agricultural past is now urbanized development including shopping malls with restaurants/bars/nightlife venues near Interstate 5 exit 114A/Una VezRoads 116A-118A/. Today there are few homes left in downtown while major portions of west side have been developed into apartment buildings or commercial zones known as "The Zone". In December 2009 it became clear that new flood plain management plans were needed due to changes across America made after Katrina hit New Orleans; accordingly on January 9th 2010 Mayor Greg Nickels announced his decision not only would property owners be allowed back onto their properties but they would receive compensation for any damage done during Hurricane Ike - something which had never happened before in Oregon history! However following public outcry this reversal later proved correct when most residents reverted back onto their prior positions because no damages were found even though much criticism had been leveled against Nickels for his handling of the situation given how much money could have easily been avoided if he’d simply listened to those who complained about potential flooding risks before making his decision! As a result water levels continue slowly rising even though there are numerous restrictions placed on residential development east of I-5 due concerns about possible flooding hazards posed by Kettle Ridge Dam downstream from town - something which has yet to happen despite years of planning! There is currently talk about having a levee constructed just east of town along Kettle Ridge Dam as an emergency measure should water levels ever rise too high again although further debate exists over whether or not this will actually help prevent future flooding events! Although some local activists continue protesting these developments they pale into insignificance compared to what has taken place here over recent decades...a community that continues strugglingdespite constantly changing circumstances

In addition to their role as a transportation hub for Thurston County, Tumwater also supports a number of cultural events each year including art festivals, music concerts, agricultural fairs and summertime picnics/festivals that draw thousands of people from throughout Washington state.
