The town was formed in 1855 when settlers from nearby Vancouver gathered around the new Fort Tumwater and began to build their homes. By 1870, the population had reached 2,000 and by 1890 it had grown to 4,500. The first store in Tumwater opened in 1892. In 1907, the first post office was established in Tumwater. In 1912, construction began on what would become Oregon's first commercial dam on the Columbia River. The dam created a artificial lake that became known as Lake Oswego and provided water for irrigation and for power generation until it was destroyed by floods in 1944. The area around present-day Tacoma and Olympia was inhabited by the Nisqually tribe for over 10,000 years before white settlers arrived.
