Tukwila, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington, located in King County on the Olympic Peninsula. The first mayor was Hyrum Johnson and until 1921 there were only three streets: Market Street NW - now First Avenue SW - Tenth Avenue SE & Columbia Road NE - now Convention Way NE. On February 5th 1921 Mayor Johnson announced that incorporation had been granted to Tukwala by Territorial Governor George Morris who said: It will be interesting to see how thisCity grows...We are confident that it can meet with your approval if properly managed

Tukwila is a city in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 582 at the 2010 census, down from 612 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area and the Puget Sound region. Tukwila was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Kitsap County in 1851. The town was named after Tukwila Chief John Kakeepee and his people's village on the river near present-day Lake Union. A post office called "Tukwila" was established in 1854, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1865, Captain James Fauntleroy of USS " Constitution" landed with military force at Tukwila Cove to begin skirmishes against renegade Indians led by Chief Seattle. He named the cove after himself, Admiral George Vancouver's flagship during that battle which ended with Vancouver's victory over Seattle's forces at Puget Sound Naval Base on September 17, 1865. The city began to grow rapidly around this time as more settlers arrived and began building homes and businesses along Broadway Avenue (now Eighty-second Street). In 1872, Tukwila had a school and an Episcopal church; but these were both destroyed by fire just two years later. In 1902, Tukwilla annexed neighboring Kiplingville; however Kiplingville never gained much attention due to its remote location and low population density (just three people per square mile). In 1916, when King County entered into a land exchange with Spokane County that gave them all of Kitsap County except for portions of Thurston County (including modern-day Olympia), Tukwila became part of King county under its new boundaries. Allied forces conducted an amphibious assault against Japanese forces occupying Iwo Jima during World War II from June 1944 through August 1945; prior to this event most residents did not know about or participate in the war because it was being fought far away from their hometowns. As a result of this engagement many buildings still remain standing within downtown areas today indicative of how well functioning our infrastructure has been since then even though we’ve seen some pretty bad things happen here like 9/11
Tukwila was founded in 1885 by Seattle businessman and Territorial Governor James P. Bennett as the county seat of Kittitas County. The first public school was built in Tukwila in 1889, and the first post office opened in 1890. In 1903, Kittitas County was renamed King County after George Washington, and Tukwila became the county seat of that new county. In 1907, Kittitas County annexed part of Snohomish County to form a new larger entity; Tukwila remained its only county seat. In 1912, the state legislature created Thurston County within King County; Tukwila became its only county center. On July 1, 1914, King and Thurston Counties merged to form Kitsap County; Tukwila remained its only county center. On January 1, 1925, Kitsap and Pierce Counties united to become Snohomish County; again, Tukwilla remained its sole county center. The population of Tukwila peaked at over 100,000 on December 15th 1941 when many people were evacuated from Japan during World War II due to bombing raids over Pearl Harbor. However due to economic conditions during the war and advancing technology the population decreased rapidly after 1945 until it reached almost 50% below pre-war levels by 1970s although it has slowly increased since then
