Tukwila, Washington is a city located in Kitsap County, Washington on thesound of Puget Sound. The population was 21,532 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kitsap County and home to Lake Tukwila and several other local landmarks. The name "Tukwila" means "place where salmon grow". The first people to live in what is now Tukwila were the Nisqually people who arrived from Southern Russia in 1792. They became permanent residents in 1834 when they bought land from the Yakima tribe. In 1855, commissioners from Tacoma decided that Tukwila should be the new county seat. On July 14, 1861, voters approved a resolution to make Tukwila their permanent home. A year later, on November 6th, 1862, it was officially incorporated as a town under territorial jurisdiction. In 1871–72 an estimable Native American community called Nisqually village developed near where now Southworth Park stands; however this settlement did not survive into future years because it was destroyed by white settlers after being abandoned by its original occupants around 1870-1871 as Fort Lawley took over much of what had been Nisqually country (the Treaty of NEFTA ceded most of Puget Sound to Seattle). On October 15 1886 saw a major fire involving more than 100 firefighters which burned for days along Pioneer Boulevard NW in downtown (now First Avenue NW). Despite heavy damage done to building materials and residences alike including one third loss of life due to smoking and heat exposure during conflagration-known then as "The Great Fire", there was no further loss or damage until 1893 when another major fire destroyed most of Pioneer Boulevard NW throughout downtown with only minor damage taking place while Brush Street remained largely unscathed; this event remains Hallmark History's Only Major Fireever! A post office operated at Everson Building #1 (now First Avenue Northwest) until 1907 when Territorial mail service moved out to Tacoma Post Office #4 which also served as Corbett's grocery store until 1918 when it closed down amid financial difficulties brought about by World War I rationing measures and severe competition from Tacoma's larger post office chain rivaling prices paid foroil products! During World War II Japanese military personnel interned at various naval bases along Puget Sound left behind many artifacts including aircraft parts and tools used aboard warships moored off Olympia Bay such as these large anchors used for moorings between 1941-1942 These anchors are now on display at Evergreen Museum in Olympia . In 1945 Army soldiers were stationed here during WW II before finally leaving following Japan's defeat resultant end of war with USA
