Tukwila is a small town in the Washington state capital of Olympia, located on the shore of Puget Sound. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Tukwila is one of the oldest towns in Washington and first settled by Native Americans in 1792. In 1853, it became a city and has since grown to be one of the most significant communities in Olympia. The town was named after John Tukwila, an Indian trader who lived near present-day Tukwila on May 24, 1810. The name "Tukwila" means "place where there are salmon." John Tukwila's family were among the earliest settlers in what would become Olympia. He founded a trading post here with his brother-in-law Jacob Sattler in 1812. From this post, he sold goods to local residents and made connections with other Native American traders up and down Puget Sound. In 1853, when Olympia was founded as a Territorial City, boundaries were expanded to include much of what is now King County including parts of present day Tacoma and Everett. The city council voted to rename itself "Olympia" on November 5, 1853 – just four days after it granted cityhood to the town within its borders. At that time, only about 100 people lived in Olympia; by 1870, it had swollen to more than 2,000 residents. As part of its growth as a city during this period, Olympia built various public works projects such as a waterworks system and sewerage system; created government jobs; constructed homes for merchants and professionals; opened businesses such as restaurants and stores; erected schools; built libraries; began construction of an Interstate Highway (I-5) connecting Seattle with Tacoma; designed new streetscapes for downtown which remain today: these included Commercial Street between First Avenue South & Third Street West (now Pioneer Square), Broadway North between Fourth Avenue North & Fifth Avenue North (now Eastlake Boulevard), Pike Place Market Boulevard between Union Pacific Way & Seventh Avenue South (now NE 50th Street), SW 62nd St., NW 60th St., SE 54th St., NE 36th St., MLK Jr.'s Way between SW 122nd Ave & SE 124th Ave (Now NE 6th Ave.), NW 106th Ave (& Bellingham Rd.)
Tukwila was founded in 1881 by Captain George Vancouver and his wife, Elizabeth.
