In 1881, the city of Tukwila was organized as a town in King County. The name “Tukwila” is derived from the Porcupine Tree which stands near the present-day intersection of Puget Sound Boulevard and NE 12th Street. In 1905, Tukwila annexed portions of the town of Kent and formed Kent School District No. 2. On July 1, 1907, all of King County except for Seattle was detached from Washington Territory and became part of the new United States Federal district known as Seattle. The annexation of parts of Kent School District No. 2 resulted in increased competition for school supplies between Tukwila and Kent due to their close proximity to each other on Puget Sound Boulevard. In 1916, Seattle City Council passed an ordinance establishing night limits on drinking in public places within city limits. This ordinance was repealed by a later council resolution because it did not take into account advances in sanitation technology which made drinking at night much less objectionable than it had been before.
