Development continued until 1999 when an expressway called State Route 99E bypassed Tukwila and made it much easier for cars to drive through town center without stopping at every stoplight. This caused many businesses and homes to close down and make way for shopping malls while also reducing access to downtown streets which used to be full of people walking or biking to their jobs outside of town limits
The first Europeans to visit Tukwila were the Dutch in 1607 and the British in 1792. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Tukwila was founded by Captain James Cook on December 12, 1804. Cook named the town after his ship, HMS Discovery, which he sighted while sailing through Puget Sound.
