A new library opened in 1957 with a gift from Mrs. Ethel Hillstroms; it continues to be one of the few public libraries in Pierce County without advertising or subscription fees today. In 1998, developers proposing to build luxury condominiums on land adjacent to downtown Tukwila proposed demolishing much of downtown for their project; however local residents successfully lobbied against this plan andSaveTukwila won a lawsuit that halted construction pending further review by government officials. The SaveTukwila campaign also helped lead to passage of Initiative 71 which established zoning regulations limiting high-rise development within city limits while preserving important cultural features such as open spaces around downtown cores; these rules were later changed after several years of litigation following concerns about potential impacts on nearby businesses and residences (including former Stompin' Grounds nightspot). Since enactment, highrises haveachopped considerably in price but no buildings have actually been built onsite since 2002 (though plans are being considered again).
