Tukwila is a city in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 11,902 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kitsap County. The name "Tukwila" is derived from the Choctaw word "tukwil", meaning "foggy place." Tukwila was platted in 1873 and named for Samuel Lane Tilton, an American missionary who had come to Puget Sound in 1851 to help promote Christianity among the native people. The city's history can be traced back to when it was known as Ephrata Springs Township. In 1881, during the first years of World War I, General John J. Pershing ordered all U.S. forces in Northwest Washington to assemble at Seattle for assembly duty; this included most of Kitsap County including Tukwila and its then-township of Ephrata Springs. Tukwila residents served in various capacities throughout the war including providing food and water to troops on battlefields around Seattle and Tacoma as well as helping with munitions production at Sammamish Arsenal near Olympia. After World War I ended, many new homes were built in what is now downtown Tukwila while others closed down because of lack of business or other reasons such as becoming too expensive to maintain (the old post office being one example). In 1954, after much discussion between local officials and representatives from King County over how best to handle development within existing town boundaries without breaking up the community into two separate towns – which would have resulted in less government control over resources – approval was given for a new city hall complex on South Seventh Street west of Interstate 5 which would serve both cities simultaneously under one roof with City Hall located on Constitution Avenue just east of South Seventh Street (completing what had been started by former Mayor Harry Sievers). At that time there were only a few hundred residents living within city limits although annexed portions of unincorporated districts like Alakazam Park (now part of Mukilteo) lay just beyond downtown limits further east along State Route 167 (Alakazam Boulevard today). With growth came growth services such as parks and recreation facilities Addition Park Zoo opened its doors in 1959 bringing more than 12 000 visitors each year; Streetscape Development Corporation began work on improving arterial streetscape outside downtown limits complete with widened sidewalks, streetlights and planted trees beginning in 1966; reactivated streetcar service began running through Downtown areas making it easier for pedestrians to get around during night hours; significant expansions occurred at Mariners Stadium with an addition of luxury suites housing some 6 000 customers per game beginning August 1974 followed by expansion into Husky Stadium adding auxiliary fields for soccer and track & field use beginning November 1975 As mentioned earlier Downtown area gradually became completely surroundable by high-rise buildings until approximately 2000 when Belmont Tower (northwest corner First Avenue south side intersection block 1/2), tallest building currently standing within CITY LIMITS Completed: 2006 With continued rapid growth throughout these years infrastructure requirements have continually increased culminating with replacement or renovation projects costing an estimated $155 million dollars that are currently underway including: construction slated for completion next year atop Expo Center Blocks 3/4 & 4 - This project will create upwards Of 350 jobs across multiple contractors industries creating opportunities for businesses adjacent thereto affecting neighborhoods adjacent thereto totaling 9 acres currently zoned industrial park operated by Kitsap County adjoining numerous schools - School construction/improvements total nearing $30 Million also anticipated impacts include increased traffic congestion formerly seen along South Seventh Street near I-5 Exit 116 which will no longer be reached easily from either side due current development plans; significant Expansion has occurred recent 2nd story apartments located immediately northsouthwest corner First Ave south side intersection block 2/3 completed: 2013

Tukwila is a city in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 24,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kitsap County and the largest city in Kitsap County by population. Tukwila was founded in 1887 by George Wright and named for its founder's hometown, Tula, Russia. As a small town on the Centralia River where agricultural production supplemented local trade, Tukwila grew slowly until World War II when it became an important port for munitions and naval supplies from Japan. After the war, Tukwila experienced rapid growth as a center of education and industry; many Boeing plants were established here during the late 1960s through early 1980s as part of downtown redevelopment efforts that followed Interstate 5 expansion into what had been rural Kitsap County. In recent years however, suburban development has begun to take hold with retail and office space continuing to be built along I-5 while residential areas become more popular with commuters reaching Tukwila via Everett or Tacoma airports. The history of Tukwila goes back to 1887 when George Wright founded Tula (now known as Yakima) after his home country of Russia. At first called "Wrightville", then "Natchez", then "Casa Grande", this small town began as subsistence farming on the Centralia River near today's intersection of Purdy Road and Railroad Drive NW before becoming an important stop on stagecoach routes connecting Puget Sound with western Russia. By 1892 there were six families living in what is now downtown Tula - three from Scotland (one father and two sons), one American (George Wright), one Canadian (John Aird), two Russians (Fyodor Yandle and Pavel Kovalchuk), one German (Johannes Bachmann) - all making their home near what would later become Fourth Avenue SW'. In 1886 John Aird purchased 640 acres around today's Fourth Avenue SW for $8 per acre ($ ) - land that would eventually form central downtown Tula. He named his new community "Tula" after his homeland which he arrived in 1847 aboard USS Constitution under President James Klahr during Russian America Company Exploring Expedition No 4 under Captain Charles Wilkes sailing from San Francisco Bay bound for Seattle with provisions for 400 Russian Americans who had journeyed overland from Siberia via Alaska 3 weeks earlier on May 15th – thus beginning Russian America Company’s first commercial enterprise outside Alaska! At first called “Wrightville” because only residents could carry arms Title 2 residents may not have landed any property excepting their homestead but within 6 months they changed it to “Natchez” because most everyone knew everyone else here so pretty soon everyone was familiar too! At least we thought so….. When George Wright moved back east in 1888 he took his wife Anna hilliard pregnant with their son Howard born April 12th 1889 at their house 301 First Ave NW across from Today’s Amtrak station………. However due to US military service obligations Anna died about 3 1/2 months premature due to yellow fever contracted while serving our great nation her husband never recovered & passed away Jan 14th 1890 age 49 leaving behind 4 children………. So Anna Hilliard truly did give birth TO THE KITKATKA CITY COUNCILMANSHIP !!! Mrs Wright also set up home down present day Third Street NE across from Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic church served by Epiphany Lutheran Church until 1906 when mother & child moved out onto Main street where St Ignatius Stonecutter School currently stands……… Mr G Wright actually donated land next door on Third Street NE still being used today as ground floor parking lot for St Ignatius stonecutter school…………......... just like momma used to do….. heck even some stores still use that same address back then ya know????????? The first European to visit Tukwila was Captain George Vancouver in 1792. The first town in the area was built on a bluff overlooking Puget Sound, and named after Captain Vancouver. The town grew rapidly and by 1853 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1861, the city became an official county seat of King County when it was created from parts of Puget Sound Territory. By 1912, the population had reached 1,500 people and the city had annexed much of rural land east of Seattle. When Seattle incorporated as a city in 1909, Tukwila became its second city after Tacoma. In 1930, the King County Seat Act transferred control of the county government from Seattle to King County.
