On April 4, 1912, the town merged with the cities of Everett and Ballard to form what is now Seattle–Tukwila. On November 5, 1916 Washington statehood was granted to the United States; Tukwila became its fifth city. In 1959, Tukwila joined King County as one of five independent counties in Washington State. In 1970, King County voters approved an amendment to their Constitution that made Tukwila an unincorporated township within the county for all purposes except tax assessment and social services (which are administered bySeattle). The next year saw another vote to annex parts of south Puget Sound into Seattle based on growing land values there; this annexation failed but set off a years-long legal battle over how much land was annexed and how much remained unincorporated inTukwiladevelopment boundaries
