In 1930s aluminum production began here and has continued through the present day as one of Washington's leading industrial centers. Today, Tukwila remains an active community with a wide variety of businesses including restaurants, hotels, stores and arts organizations. The town hosts annual Oktoberfest celebration which draws thousands of visitors each year to its many events such as music concerts and dances among others

The name "Tukwila" means "place of big salmon" in the Klallam language. The first permanent settler in what is now Tukwila was Samuel Tukwila who arrived in 1885 from Oregon. He built a log cabin on the east bank of Clearwater River, which he named Salmon Falls after his favorite salmon stream near his home state of Oregon. In 1890, John Tukwila followed Samuel's example and settled in what is now downtown Tukwila. John started a grocery store and garage/repair shop on First Avenue NE, which remains one of the most active businesses in town to this day. The twins ran their business until their death in 1951; thereafter it was run by their son-in-law Harry Denny for many years until it passed into hands of his grandchildren Tom and Dianne Denny late last year.www1 In 1946, during World War II, the Army built Camp Lewis (later Fort Lewis) on land that had been given to George Washington University as part of the Moraga Purchase agreement between Japan and America. Thousands of soldiers were stationed here during World War II: nearly all were discharged here within six months because there were no suitable civilian housing developments available nearby.ww2 As housing became more plentiful following war peace came to Tacoma & Seattle they began commuting back & forth between these cities finding little jobs close enough to return home w/o benefits so vm couldn't just leave again
The city of Tukwila, Washington was founded in 1885 by the merger of two small villages, Heceta and Onalaska. The city became a thriving metropolis after its incorporation as an incorporated municipality in 1903. In 1921, the City of Tukwila annexed the adjacent rural community of East Wenatchee. The annexation created a new municipal district which included most of what is today the city limits. In 1959, the City annexed part of the town of Moses Lake to create a new municipal district.
