Tukwila is a small town in the Puget Sound area of Washington, United States. It is located in Kitsap County, southeast of Seattle and north of Tacoma. The Tukwila post office was first established in 1907. The population was 677 at the 2010 census. The name "Tukwila" is from the Choctaw word "tuka", meaning "a place for Hunting." In 1853, George Vancouver sighted what he thought was a coasting vessel filled with Indians on what is now known as Tukwila Bay and called it by that name. In 1855, Captain John A. Macdonald reported finding potash trees on land later owned by Houghton & Company near present-day Tukwila Landing on the river's east bank. This discovery led to a mining boom in the region which began around 1860 and lasted until 1865 when an accidental fire destroyed most of the mines there. In 1870, James Armstrong cofounded the First National Bank in Tukwila with Wm Ewing and others including Cushman & Wakefield who were also early settlers hereabouts; it remains one of Pierce County's largest banks today (although no longer operational). At this time, local lumberyards were among several businesses founded during this period due to increased demand for logs brought overland from British Columbia during logging drives across Canada during that decade or so; some 20 miles northwest of downtown Tukwilla at Mount Rainier Lumber Company sawmill #2 still stands today producing lumber for buildings and other purposes until recently despite extensive damage done by wildfires over the past few years. A post office operated at Tukwila from 1907 to 1959; its ZIP code at that time was 98201. As part of a larger process initiated by Congress in response to President Woodrow Wilson's call for an American Expedition to find members of any nation who had fallen victim to Spanish flu pandemic (1918-1919), construction began on Capitol Hill Naval Observatory on May 12, 1919; Drs Arthur Hill Compton (then Director) and Willis Osterberg served as engineers/builders together with many local men involved including future King County Executive Norm Coleman(D) who helped design both building popularly known as 'the Dome' - atop Capitol Hill - and then serving as Managerial Assistant while Drs Compton directed Operations throughout its construction.) On July 15th 1922 Pacific Electric Railway completed electrification along their line between Seattle and Olympia extending service southward through Tacoma to Portland; electric cars began operations November 1st 1923 passenger service between Seattle Center Terminal via Olympia Station & Tacoma Terminal ran daily originally connecting opposite terminals 3 times each day but frequency increased when new tracks were laid making every stop eventually running all night 7 days a week!
