Tukwila is a town in the lower Columbia River Valley of Washington, United States. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. The name Tukwila is thought to be derived from the Hahamat Yunis (Haida word meaning "watercourse"), which flowed through the town and its surroundings for many years before being diverted by building projects. The first people to live in what is now Tukwila were Native Americans, who hunted and gathered food near the Columbia River. In 1851, Vancouver resident John Sutter founded his farm in present-day Tukwila after moving from Sacramento County, California. After some years of growth, Sutter built a sawmill and store around 1857 on the river's edge; this became the nucleus of early commercial activity in present-day Tukwila. However, construction on large new settlements began only after Oregon Territory was organized into Washington Territory in 1861 following US admission into that Union. One such settlement was Logansport, located east of present day Tukwila on upper Puget Sound. This community grew rapidly due to its location between two major rivers and access to good farmland and trade with nearby Oregon City and Seattle. By 1870, Logansport had a school, Methodist church (founded 1865), grocery store (1867), hospital (1868), doctor's office (1869), restaurant (1871), blacksmith shop (1872) and wagon road connecting it with Puget Sound. In 1886, when Yarrow Creek overflowed its banks resulting in waterlogging that affected most of eastern Thurston County including parts of today's Olympia area as well as much of downtown Tacoma - creating one of history's largest man-made lakes - settlers began clearing land for farming along current Day Lake Road/State Route 5 south of today’s Colville Yesler Village until it reached Day Creek about four miles east of present day town limits; this area became known as Logansport Landing because loggers used to bring their cargo downriver there for storage before sailing out again more than a mile upstream towards Mount Baker Dam where they would unload their lumber onto barges before shipping it back upriver again). What followed were several decades during which placer gold mining operations using explosives operated intermittently along Yarrow Creek bed; however claims have been made by both residents and professionals that significant amounts or alluvial gold also occurred within an approximately 350 acre parcel just upstream from today’s townsite on Day Creek extending nearly six miles downstream from yesterday’s millrace known locally as Snake Hill which formed part creek bottom end today’s Town Site boundaries prior thereto). Finally starting about 1930 when streambank erosion turned mudflats above Mill Race overreaching spawning salmon streams resulted finally allowing development commenced herein even though no clear economic benefit accrued beyond increased ferrying services available especially during late summer months thereby continuing until recently despite documented environmental damage including extensive flooding resulting from heavy rains last year associated with extreme winter weather conditions particularly affecting southwestern Thurston Counties) .
