Tukwila is located on Puget Sound near the mouth of the Tukwila River. The area around present day Tukwila was covered by an icecap when it formed about 8 million years ago during the Pliocene epoch. About 2 million years ago, tephra from an eruption that created Mount St Helens began to fall into this area and cause erosion which created most of what we see today around Tukwila including much of downtown and many homes along the riverbank. In 1792 British fur traders built Fort George at modern-day Puget Sound for protection against American Indians who were raiding white settlements in what is now Kitsap County. After several failed attempts to establish permanent Greek island villages here during the early 1800s due to lack of land or resources nearby, Captain Johnstone explored and surveyed Puget Sound in 1801 for King George III with plans to establish settlements on areoles he named "Nisqually" (now Nisqually Island), "Enderby" (now Enderby Island), and "Dalles". When no one offered any proposals for these areas after his survey, Johnstone returned home with his findings but never sent anything back so Nisqually became Dalles and Enderby became Everett until they were combined into one large settlement by Royal governor James Douglas in 1836 following his decision that all three had strategic value within the colony as agricultural centres due to their close proximity to Seattle - becoming known as Tacoma then - making them capital cities." In 1851 local miners discovered substantial gold nuggets at Sodo Mines near present day Olympia while prospecting for new sites for Kitimat harbor; however this discovery did not trigger development because there were no other goldfields available in western Washington at that time However a few months later Alaskan independent miner prospector Aritz Passailaert discovered rich coal seams just east of Sodo Mines which led to further development at Sodo Mines where trains could be delivered daily from Gold Rush days up until 1862 when cars arrived with enough coal to last until delivery week began again using ferries running between Tacoma and Olympia
