The name is derived from the historical site of Tukwila Lake where Seattle and Tacoma were founded. The first European to visit what is now Tukwila was Capt. James Cook in 1792 on his HMS Endeavour voyage from England to Tahiti. He named it "Tahiti" after the island of that name off the coast of Japan. In 1847, during the final days of Oregon Territory'sexistence as a separate country, Tukwila became part of the new territory and was renamed by territorial governor George Vancouver as "Kingdom Park." In 1912, when King County was created within Washington state, parts of what are now north Fremont and south Redmond were merged into Tukwila Township including much of today's east side streets and businesses along Aurora Avenue NW. After World War II many Japanese-owned businesses closed down in western King County; however most continue to operate in adjacent Bellevue or Yakima Valley areas today. With growth in northwest Seattle since then (and continued suburban sprawl), most Japanese-owned businesses have relocated back to Tukwila or elsewhere west of I-5 . The recent influx of foreigners has had a mixed effect on business owners here: some are welcoming newcomers who want to start new businesses but others fear they will take away jobs from native residents. Still other businesses worry about how best to deal with increased traffic and noise caused by people coming for work rather than shopping or playing outside their stores

The first post office was established in 1893. In 1916, Tukwila amalgamated with neighboring Hermiston to form the towns of Hermiston, Olympia and Tukwila. Tukwila has experienced various commercial changes over its history including a brief stint as an agricultural center during World War II when Boeing produced aircraft parts there; it became an industrial center after Boeing vacated the factory in the early 1990s; and since 2000 it has been known for its annual "TractorFest" car show which attracts many cars from around the Northwest and Western US. One of the most visible features of Tukwila is its large aquifer which supplies water to much of Puget Sound region

The town was founded by Captain James Halliday and his family as a trading post on the Spokane River. The town name derived from the local Tanana word "tuka" meaning "place where white people live." In 1876, the town became a city and soon afterwards elected its first mayor. From 1893 until 1907, Tukwila was part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Afterward, it reverted to its original status as a city and has since grown into one of Western Washington's most populous communities.
