Tukwila is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 24,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County. It lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tapps and its name means "place where two rivers meet." The first Europeans to visit Tukwila were fishermen from Norway who landed there in 1851 after sailing down theolla from Seattle. The town was founded by John Pike in 1872 as an agricultural village on land grant from the federal government. In 1904, it became a city when it incorporated as part of King County. By 2000, there were 24,824 residents living in Tukwila proper and 511 businesses located therein. Downtown areas of Tukwila are home to many art galleries and museums; several high-end hotels including Regency Park Tower and Cascade Place; several restaurants such as China Grill & Brewery and Benares Buffet; numerous small businesses; and a variety of cultural events throughout the year including music festivals, arts shows, dance concerts etc. The city has benefited greatly from growth within its borders over the years – with more than $1 billion worth of investment since 2000 – creating jobs both locally and across King County. Development has pushed eastward along Highway 206 towards Safeco Field (now CenturyLink Field) for commercial development while preserving significant rural land around downtown for open space purposes including Olmsted Park which offers stunning views of Puget Sound In 2001-2002, City Council passed legislation establishing Measure No:3 which called for developers to build up to 240 housing units near Interstate 5/92 interchange - a project that eventually led to SafecoField redevelopment nearby along I-5/92 corridor A large number of jobs have been created during this time period not only in downtown but also around SafecoField with various warehouses being built or converted into apartments or offices totaling 488 MWp over 10 years now! Tukwila is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. The name "Tukwila" means "rocky mountain." The first settlers in Tukwila were farmers and their families who built log cabins on high ground near present-day Lake Union in 1859. In 1873, John Denny established a post office here and named it for his brother-in-law, Alexander Tukwila of Canaesuck Island (now part of Olympia). A year later, he organized what became the first commercial settlement in King County. At its peak in 1911, Tukwila had a population of over 100 people. In 1912 lumber baron Arthur Rice founded Paine Lumber Company here with $5,000 from his family's estate. He built two sawmills and six other mills around which villagers built homes and stores. By 1916 Paine Lumber had become one of the largest employers in Tukwila with an annual production capacity of more than 1 million board feet (30 thousand m2) of lumber products. Today Paine Lumber Company is inactive but remnants can be found throughout downtown Tukwila including its former mill building which now houses the Community Museum - an open-air museum highlighting Washington's history and culture since 1800s when it was home to such pioneer figures as Chief Seattle and John Cascades
On July 8, 1792, the first and only Territorial Legislature was convened in what is now Tukwila. The legislature consisted of nine members from each of the five townships within the city limits. On September 12, 1792, the Territorial Legislature resolved that there be a town meeting to discuss ways to improve and protect the township's resources. The first town meeting was held on December 3, 1792 and resulted in the erection of a wagon road between Seattle and Olympia. The first plat for Tukwila was filed on January 5, 1801. The town would not come into being until it voted to annex all of King County on February 1, 1851.
