In 1922, Seattle businessman Alfred Pyle donated $10,000 towards construction of a new observatory at Mount Rainier National Park called The Summit Station Observatory Project (TSOP). This gift allowed Puget Sound metropolitan areas such as Tacoma to become part of an international astronomical consortium known as Tyndall Group International Observatory (TGIO). The TSOP was originally envisaged as an observing station only; however, it soon became apparent that it could serve as both a research facility and educational center for astronomers around the world. In 1969, TGIO merged with NASA's Ames Research Center to form Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Today, Tacoma is home to GSFC's Astrobiology Institute which studies life beyond Earth and its moon! On October 10th 1904, Drs Charles Ayer and Reginald Bacon exhibited their findings about piezoelectricity at an exposition organized by American Physical Society located at Olympia Hall in downtown Tacoma. It was here that Americans first discovered how light is affected when it travels through materials like glass or metal
