The Tacoma Rifle and Pistol Club (TRPC) was founded in 1903. The original club members were riflemen from Tacoma, Washington who would meet for shooting practice at the local public range. In 1911, the TRPC changed its name to the Tacoma Rifle and Pistol Association and began meeting atlocal hotel. After World War I, many of the riflemen who had fought in Europe returned home and started a new rifle club in Tacoma called the National Guard Armory Rifle Club. Thisclub met at an armory on Third Street North until it closed in 1940 due to lack of membership. In 1941, another new rifle club was formed in Tacoma by veteran gunsmiths named John Nolen and Harry Semenovich. The club met at an old schoolhouse on Second Avenue South until it closed also due to lack of membership. In 1945, another new rifle club was formed in Tacoma by veterans named Eugene McCarthy and Irving Nordquist. The first meeting took place at a restaurant on University Avenue South before moving to First Place North where it continued meetings until 1949 when it disbanded because of low registration numbers. In 1951, a new NRA-sponsored rifle society was organized in Tacoma by gunsmiths Edward Fenton and Ralph Hickey with merger of two other societies which had been formed earlier: The American Legion Armory Society (founded 1916) and the Seattle Rifles Society (founded 1925). The merged societies held their first meeting on October 10th51 under the name “Tacoma Rifle & Pistol Clubs” Incorporated with EJFenton as President & Ralph Hickey as Secretary/Treasurer; George Pfeffer as Treasurer/Secretary Emeritus; Arthur Crouch as Treasurer Emeritus Alternate;and Geraldine Jaffe as Membership Secretary alternate during that year’s meetings which were held at then current site ofthe Civic Center across Puget Sound from Forest Park Elementary School]. In 1955 they changed their name back to “Tacoma Rifle & Pistol Clubs Incorporated” with EJFenton again president while Hickey became treasurer./treasurer alternates; GPffeffer secretary emeritus;Arthur Crouch secretary emeritus alternate;and Geraldine Jaffe Membership Secretary alternate.] As such there have been various incarnations through various names over time including TRCI-FM 1946-1955, TRPC 1951-1955, RCPS 1950-1959 etc., but all initials represent one common goal - maintaining active firearms training opportunities for local residents throughout Pierce County!
