Tacoma's history goes back to 1853 when it was founded as a trading post on the Seattle-Tacoma Trail by Kit Carson and his followers. The city was named for General George Custer, who died in 1876 while fighting with the United States Army at Battle of Little Bighorn. In 1907, Tacoma became part of what would become Seattle and in 1949 it joined the Northwest Department of Commerce and Industry. Tacoma has had a variety of businesses since its founding; some that continue today include Boeing, Microsoft, Allstate Insurance Co., Costco Wholesale Club, Safeway Supermarkets (now JCPenney), and many more.
