Tacoma, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 563 at the 2010 census. Tacoma was founded in 1855 by George Stephenson and named for General James K. Polk of the United States army. It is the seat of King County. The first permanent settler in Tacoma was John Stevens who arrived in 1853 from Rhode Island. He built a log cabin on the site of what is now downtown Tacoma and named it "Stevensville". In 1854, he married Mary Lyon and they founded their own small town to the south called "Lyle". One year later, they moved to Tacoma and began trading goods with Native Americans living around them. In 1860, they became charter members of the American Association for Promoting Christianity and Education (AAPE). The town's name changed several times over its early years but eventually settled on "Tacoma" after Chief Seattle's recommendation. By 1865, when Territorial governor Isaac Stevens granted land to residents for a new county courthouse there were only 10 residents – all men – living in Tacoma proper; two were white traders and four were native citizens of Indian descent who had been given land as part of Puget Sound Treaty Seven (1855). In 1861–62 Civil War veteran David Sanger set up a sawmill at present-day Uniontown on Lake Washington Boulevard near Point Defiance before moving his operation to what is now Pioneer Square in 1870 due to an outbreak of typhoid fever among his workers which he successfully treated with quinine taken from Peru while visiting that country. This gave rise to an urban legend that Sanger sold death penalty drugs from his mill if you could catch him while he left work sick rather than risking exposure during epidemics like typhoid fever did then or afterwards: An early streetcar service ran between Pioneer Square and Uniontown serving primarily local farmers until 1876 when streetcars started running between Seattle and Olympia making Tacoma more accessible outside its original core business areas such as Pioneer Square/Uniontown/Lake Washington Boulevard etc., however this also opened up residential neighborhoods within mile radius including North Park/University Heights which are still today heavily populated by people of Japanese ancestry because these neighborhoods were not served by streetcar lines at that time
