Tacoma is a city in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. Tacoma is the second most populous city in the Puget Sound area after Seattle and the third most populous city in Washington state after Spokane and Olympia. On July 15, 1907, King County purchased all of what is now east side of Interstate 5 from Goldsboro Township to create Chelan County around which new towns were proposed including Lester Prairie west of I-5 and Auburn north of I-5. These towns never materialized because gold mining became less important after World War II. On February 14, 1949, voters passed a resolution authorizing creation of a city government for Tacoma proper within one year following passage by City Council Resolution No 7/49 requesting such action (the first time votes had been taken on municipal issues in Pierce County). On November 9th ballot items were placed before City Council asking whether or not they should pass resolutions authorizing establishment of a city government for Tacoma proper; no vote was taken on these items as council members felt it would be premature to do so until more information had been gathered about developing conditions within theCityofTacoma itself rather than just sending lettersifying notices to residents advising them how their elected officials could help improve their qualityoflife within the City Limits). A letter from Mayor John Cavanaugh stating that he had considered petitions received from citizens urging establishment of a city government for Tacoma stated "I am gratified to find that your feelings have been aroused sufficiently by this movement [for] me also it will be my responsibility as Mayor puppet master’s representative when talking with our representatives in Olympia about ways we can work together better." After much discussion among council members it voted 3-2 against acquiring authority to establish acitygovernmentforTacomaPrcinctand issuinga proclamation giving effect thereto; this decision represented an end to deliberations over establishing acity government forTacomaPrcinct.(Council ResolutionNo 10/49 later rescinded this decision) In 1955 Northwest Water Resources District completed acquisition duPont paper mill property directly across Elliott Bay from downtown causing many businesses located thereto relocate out into residential neighborhoods around Elliot Baygate; this event helped spur development along Water Street between Harbor Drive NW & Weyburn Avenue SW becoming known as Downtown(now University Heights)).
