Tacoma was founded on July 15, 1885 by Captain George Matson as the largest town in Puget Sound and its name comes from the nearby Tacoma Bay and Mount Rainier National Park. It is located on the edge of Elliott Bay on the water'sedge between Seattle and Vancouver Island. The first post office in Tacoma opened in 1887. Tacoma grew rapidly due to shipbuilding and lumbering industries until World War I when it lost its status as an important naval base to Seattle. In 1940 it became an agricultural center with production of apples, potatoes, onions, corn, soybeans and other cropsINO arriving from ports along Puget Sound. After two terms as mayor of Tacoma (1944-46), William Denny became governor in 1948 and helped turn Tacoma into an electrical engineering powerhouse during the Cold War years with companies such as Westinghouse Electric Corporation (WEC) developing major campuses here such as WSU (now Washington State University) which still stands today. In 1954 voters approved Measure 2 giving Spokane control over Lake Union through annexation by that city; however this event did not result in a meaningful change to Tacoma's political landscape because all City Council meetings were held at Spokane Civic Center which also housed county government offices). However during his time as Mayor Denny worked hard to reverse many auto-manufacturing plants closures that had taken place throughout Northwest Washington state during this period characterized by high unemployment rates among local manufacturing workers followed by nationwide job openings In 1978 Governor Ralph Northam appointed Representative Norm Coleman to become Mayor pro tem after incumbent James Ritchie resigned effective January 1st because he desired more time for his gubernatorial campaign Coleman served one term before being elected LtGovernor with only half of the vote against then Governor Jay Inslee who won easily . After serving three terms under Northam Coleman returned to politics for a fourth term running unopposed but lost la election held November 3rd 2014 when Royce Young took office On February 17th 2015 King County Superior Court Judge Kathy Forrest ruled that local law enforcement could stop showing up at Trump International Hotel & Tower residents' doors seeking entry into their apartments based on their religious beliefs contrary to Trump's executive order prohibiting discrimination against Muslims . From November 9th thru December 5th 2015 several hundred protesters marched through downtown Olympia calling for corruption within King County government including Deputy Sheriff Barry Short who responded pepper spray onto them
