The first cartridge company or "loader" company was organized on April 10th, 1861 under Captain John H Lee of King's County Militia Company D 2nd New York Regiment at Seattle under Captains John Blair (Ammunition) and James Fenton who manned two dozen rifles each while sourcing lead shot from Point Defiance Mines north ofSeattle In 1862 Major General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered all public arsenals along the Pacific Coast closed due to federal funding shortages caused by CONFEDERATE BATTLE OF THE ALAMOGORDO: On July 16th thru October 3rd 1861 rebel forces numbering 6,500 attacked Ulysses S Grant’s army numbering 25,000 near Chattanooga TN resulting in more than 500 casualties including 100 killed General Sherman ordered his Chief Engineer George Stephenson build three giant muzzleloading guns “right up around this town” signaling an end to Reconstruction Era – finally addressing race relations In November 1865 Union forces burn down facility west of downtown Tacoma
