The Tacoma Arsenal was a munitions manufacturing and storage facility located in Tacoma, Washington. It was active from 1855 to 1949 and manufactured artillery, mortar, ammunition, grenades, rockets and other weapons. The arsenal also developed an ammunition testing program which provided the first safety tests for American firearms. In 1949 it closed its doors after years of neglect. Today the site is open to the public as Tacoma Arsenal Park.

Today, Tacoma is home to many large businesses and industries including Boeing Co., Microsoft Corporation,[2][3] Amazon Web Services,[4] Pullman Hyundai[5], Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc., Microsoft Surface Pro 4,[6][7][8][9] Northrop Grumman Systems[10], Harbor Freight Steamship Company,[11] and Evergreen State College.[12][13] The city's nickname "The Rust Belt" may be related to its history as an agricultural center during World War II; however, much recent development has taken place in downtown which features high-rise buildings such as the University of Washington Hospital District Building and First Interstate Financial Center[14].

In 1785, Benjamin Franklin proposed using lead bullets instead of wooden arrows because they could travel further and penetrate more easily than other types of ammo. In 1847, artillerymen began using explosive cartridges to fire munitions such as cannonballs and shells. By 1850, rifles had become available which allowed people to fire larger projectiles with greater range than earlier methods. In 1865, the American Civil War ended and the Union gained control over much of the country including many cities. To finance this new government, Congress passed the National Defense Act which provided for national stockpiles of arms and ammunition. This act led to increased demand for ammunition because war was now a reality again throughout much of America. At this time, there were several different types of ammo being produced: powder rounds (also called shot), Metallic cartridges (also called black powder), rifle balls (commonly known as balls), shotgun shells (shotgun pellets), artillery shells (large TNT bombs) and naval shellac (a type of paint). During World War II, various materials were needed to make munitions: steel*, rubber* gasses*, lead* bullets*, tungsten carbide.* * Note: Some materials are no longer used in munitions production due to their toxicity or health risks associated with them
In 1911, Colt began producing the new .45 Auto handgun. This revolver was designed with a faster-fire action than most existing handguns and featured an enlarged magazine well to accommodate this increased firepower. The caliber also allowed for greater accuracy and performance in the hands of a marksman. As production continued, Colt produced several other calibers for the Auto including the 9mm, .380 ACP, and 10mm pistols.
