The first white people to live in Sunnyside were early pioneers who came from Holland in 1851. They named their community Dutch Village because that is where theyoriginally landed on Vancouver Island. The first house was built in 1852 by Cornelius Voorhees and his family. In 1854, John Denny founded the town of Pacifica on Vancouver Island after purchasing land from the Hudsons Bay Company for $5,000. In 1886, Sunnyside became part of Seattle when it was incorporated as a city with a population of 508 people. Sunnyside underwent several incarnations over its history: Dutch Village (1851-1886), Pacifica (1886-1914), Seattle (1914-present), and finally Sunnyside Heights (1998-2010). Some historical landmarks located in Sunnyside include the Pioneer Cemetery (estimated 1707 graves) and Puyallup Park which opened in 1912 as one of Seattle's original public parks and now contains an exhibit about American Indian culture and history.
