Sunnyside is a census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. Sunnyside is north of Salem and east of Bend. It is bounded by the Deschutes River on the south, Mount Hood on the east, and Richards Ranch to the north. The first white people to settle in Sunnyside were two families from Illinois who came overland in 1847 and established a cabin on what is now State Route 97B. They named their settlement "Sunnyside" after their sunburst-colored home at Sunrise Creek near Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1868another family from Illinois arrived and began to farm land around present-day Sunnyside Park. The name "Sunny Side" was given to them by a storekeeper in Bend who had seen them riding their horses across his lot one day when they were wearing bright colors that resembled the sky at sunrise or sunset. In 1882 a post office called Sunnyside was established at what is now its intersection with US 97B; it continued operation until 1906 when it was moved to Beaverton. In 1912 Sunnyside became part of Junction City and later Oregon City before becoming an independent village in 1962. Oregon Route 97 bisects Sunnyside village Limits both clockwise from North (SW) to South (E), while US 97NE travels concurrently through its entirety within limits of both villages without intersecting any other roads or boundaries between them save for an open area extending into Oregon City where either road meets again just beyond town limits: this location today marks where SR 97N meets Interstate 5 about 8 miles northeast of junction city proper as well as 12 miles due East from downtown Eugene about halfway between I-5 exits 82 & 84A). This open area abuts onto undeveloped portions of Richards Ranch which includes much valuable agricultural land lying within limits of both Junction City & Oregon City - including much prime real estate currently accessible only through special access programs restricted to landowners involved with these programs - making possible such limited development potential within those boundaries since undisturbed preñented agricultural lands have been continuously available for human habitation since ranch hands arriving there c 1776!
