The area now includes the Sunnyside Park Blocks, which are bounded on the north by Rainier Avenue South, on the east by Pacific Street, and on the south by Queen Anne Avenue North. The current name of Sunnyside comes from its location on Sunnyside Heights – an elevation of 419 feet (150 m) above mean sea level – making it one of the highest neighborhoods in Seattle. The population of Sunnyside was 7,595 at the 2010 census. At that time it had 2 schools and 1 daycare center. In 2013-14 there were only 3 students living in Sunnyside; no jobs or businesses exist within walking distance to support more than 3 people while living close to school and work opportunities are few and far between. Despite this lack of development, residents continue to identify themselves as being part of "Sunny Side." In 2007, Mayor Ed Murray announced plans for a $135 million transit expansion called Sound Transit 3. This project would add light rail lines service through Sunnyside to University Village and Ravenna Station areas along with new bus services connecting these destinations directly with downtownSeattle. The first phase of this expansion took effect in 2009 with the opening of Ravenna Station which connected Sunnysider's eastern side with downtownSeattle via Queen Anne Avenue North

Sunnyside is located on the eastern slope of Mount Rainier National Park. The first white person to settle in Sunnyside was James Fenton in 1851. In 1865, John Wesley Powell became the first person to walk through what is now Sunnyside when he led an exploration of the Columbia River region for the US Geological Survey. He discovered and named the peak east of Sunnyside "Mountaineer" after himself and his assistant, George Custer. The post office at Sunnyside was established on October 14, 1871, and remained open until it was discontinued on March 3, 1964.
The area now known as Sunnyside was part of the town of Bellevue until it merged with Seattle in 1907. Bellevue was platted in 1851, and became a city in 1901. The name of Sunnyside comes from a small stream that flowed through the community.
