Sunnyside is located in the Puget Sound region of Washington, and it has been a locality for over eighty years. Sunnyside is a small town with a population of about 1,200 people. It was first settled by German immigrants in 1884. The town was renamed Sunnyside in 1907 after one of its residents, Irving Julian Grossefeldt. The early history of Sunnyside is interesting because it reflects the changing landscape of the area. In 1906, the land that now forms Sunnyside was purchased by J.P. Morgan and his associates from John Wittek and others. The purchase included twenty-one acres (8 hectares) on which they built a large housing development called simply "Morgan". One important event in Sunnyside's early history occurred on October 12, 1916 when Japanese Americans were arrested during World War I atation at Seattle Grace Hospital under suspicion of espionage activities. Many Japanese Americans had been living in Sunnyside since 1915 when the military closed down most Japanese-American businesses east of Tacoma due to wartime restrictions on trade with Japan. Many of these individuals were interned at Seattle Grace Hospital until their release in 1919 under terms negotiated by President Harry S Truman and Prime Minister Churchill pursuant to the Surrender Agreement signed September 2, 1945; however not all Japanese American detainees were released immediately upon surrendering; many remained incarcerated until late 1946 or even into 1947 because there was still outstanding legal issues regarding their status as citizens within the United States and thus subject to various rights and protections accorded native-born citizens such as those enjoyed by Germans who had taken refuge during World War II (see: Internment Camps during World War II). 3/5ths of all internees died while held at Seattle Grace Hospital between 1914-1918 including 60% women & 30% children

The first white settler in Sunnyside was John Eaton, who arrived in 1811. The town began to grow rapidly after the construction of a canal in 1814 and the opening of the railroad in 1827. By 1830, Sunnyside had a population of around 100 people. In 1836, George Washington was born in Sunnyside. He would later serve as the first U.S. President and is considered one of its most important historical figures.
