The history of guns in Sunnyside, Washington goes back to at least 1887. The first gun targets were built on the present site of Sunnyside Elementary School in that year. At that time, there were no firearms regulations in Washington, and so shotguns and rifles were used for target shooting. In 1897, the Gun Owners’ Institute was founded in Seattle, WA as a direct response to this growing interest ingun safety. In order to promote gun ownership and target shooting among individuals of all ages, GPI developed a curriculum for Sunnyside Elementary Schools. This program included instruction on how to shoot handguns and shotguns safely, as well as demonstrations on how to take aim and fire a rifle or shotgun. In 1911, the City of Sunnyside passed an ordinance regulating handguns sales within city limits. This ordinance was designed to prevent crime by limiting access to firearms by single-purpose holders who did not have legitimate business reasons for owning them. Today, handgun owners living within city limits still must obtain a permit from the police department before purchasing any new handguns. Sunnyside, Washington is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. Sunnyside is part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The first European to see what was now Sunnyside was Juan Rodriguez de la Rúa on July 20, 1592 when he and his party of Spanish missionaries were exploring the Columbia River Gorge. De la Rúa named the spot "New Spain" after his homeland in Spain. In 1853 John Wanamaker founded Wanamaker's Department Store here and it remains one of the most famous businesses in Spokane today. The store opened its doors on Main Street in 1855 and quickly became well known for its high quality goods and friendly atmosphere. It closed in 1968 but has been reborn as a shop called Wanamaker Village that opens every day from 9 am to 6 pm inside the old department store building on Second Avenue SW (now called Johnson East). In addition to its traditional range of gift items such as hats, purses and dolls, Wanamaker Village also sells fresh produce from local farmers every morning before breakfast; offers tours of the department store during business hours; features artwork by local artists; seats an audience for performances monthly throughout the year including plays by Pacific Northwest Playwrights League; provides educational opportunities both through classes offered by local high school students and adult seminars; offers wine tastings daily during lunchtime with chef Edward Coyle serving up degustations prepared from some ofWanamaker's most popular wines -Sunnyside is home to many historical buildings dating back to when it was first settled: The original frame house still stands today on First Ave SW just south of Park St., built about 1800 by Captain George Swan (1811-1876) - Constructed between 1855-60 for Elijah Parish Jackson (1798-1864), postmaster general for Oregon Territory -In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant landed at Heceta Bay Naval Station here while seeking an army army against Confederate General Andrew Johnson - A plaque located at Naval Station Point Defiance reads: "Herein Grant landed his army near Seattle October 12th 1865" -In 1907–1908 Sunnyside vaudeville theater burned down - One account suggests that arsonists set fire to several other businesses before burning down the theater which had been open since 1905 -After World War II Sunnyside gradually regained much lost ground with few new residents moving into town until around 1990 when development began anew with a large influx of people from Eastern Washington looking for a rural town like they found in their own backyard Today Sunnyside boasts many distinguishable features such as its wide variety of shops anchor retailing along Second Ave SW between I‐5 & Park St.; multiple parks including HecetaBay park immediately east side next door (& largest); excellent schools including Whitman High School across I‐5 NW & Marietta Elementary School just south side - With over 50% growth rate annually over last 10 years!
