Sunnyside is made up of several neighborhoods: Beavercreek, Eastlake/Southeast Parkview/West End, Hilltop Village/Southwest Side, and Sunrise Hills/Northern Heights. Sunnyside's main commercial strip is centered around First Avenue North and Auburn Street North; it features a variety of small businesses including restaurants, grocery stores, etc., as well as several large institutions (including three high schools). It is located on the eastern edge of Seattle and is bordered by Issaquah to the north, Burien to the east, Maple Leaf Gardens to the south, and South Lake Union to the west. Sunnyside was first settled by farmers from Sweden in 1879. The name "Sunnyside" was given to it because of its sunny climate. The town took off after World War II when Boeing began manufacturing planes at their new airport there. Sunnyside became an agricultural community with fields and barns around what is now Pioneer Square. After Boeing left for good in the early 1960s, Sunnyside lost much of its significance as an agricultural center but has regained some recent popularity as a bedroom community for downtown residents. Today's economy depends heavily on aerospace companies such as Boeing and Microsoft; many small businesses have closed or been abandoned since these companies vacated their factories in other parts of Northwest America years ago. Many homes were built during this time period (the late 1940s through early 1960s) using plywood that could not withstand fire or damage caused by jets or other aircraft flying over them - today's houses are made out of composite materials that are much more resistant to fire than those back then. Since mostofthe village existed before Interstate 5 was built through it in 1959-60, one can only imagine how different things would be if that freeway never crossed our town!
