In 1881, a man named Hiram Keyes acquired land in what is now Sunnyside. At the time, this area consisted of woods and farmland. He set about creating a home for himself and his family and soon realized that he needed a way to protect his family from animals on his property. He decided to build himself a fortification consisting of several small buildings surrounding a large courtyard. The first building was completed in 1882 and was called Fort Keyes. Sunnyside is located on the east side of the Salish Sea about north of downtown Seattle. The name "Sunnyside" likely comes from an early settler's observation that there were no sunrises or sunsets from his property on the east side of the Salish Sea. The first resident to live in Sunnyside was George Crouse, who arrived in 1851 and built a cabin on land that now includes part of Sunnyside Drive. In 1892, one year after incorporation as a village, Sunnyside voters passed a resolution adopting the name "Sunnyside." In 1899, Mayor John Treadway ordered streetlights be installed at all village sites starting at Sunset Road and Main Street. Although Sunnyside had become established as a village by then, it officially became an incorporated town on July 14, 1903 when it passed an ordinance annexing nearby Sidney Township and forming what is today Kitsap County. Sunnyside is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. Sunnyside is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area and is included in the Puget Sound region. It lies on the eastern edge of Lake Union and has a wide variety of landscape options including rolling hills on one side and forested mountains on the other. The first Europeans to visit Sunnyside were Captains James Cook and William Bligh who passed through in 1792 while exploring British Columbia. In 1853, John Wesley Powell named Sunnyside after his friend Dr. Isaac Newton from London's Southwark district. At that time, Sunnyside was still part of Tacoma County which made it difficult for people to get here because there was no road or rail connection between Tacoma and Seattle until 1907 when King County built the route connecting those two cities with Sunnyside as its gateway into downtown Seattle. Sunnyside started out as a simple farming community with just a few hundred residents in 1910 when word got out that someone had found oil reserves in what would become known as "the Marigold Field." The oil fields were located near where Highway 99 now begins and produced an income that helped support the town's growth even though production stopped in 1957 due to depletion of resources. The town continued to grow during World War II when Boeing began producing airplanes hereabouts; steel production also increased during this time period thanks to plant construction nearby by companies such as Kaiser Aluminum Company and Ford Motor Company (a subsidiary of General Motors). After World War II ended, Sunnyside experienced some decline as many jobs moved away or were outsourced throughout Puget Sound region due to technological advances rather than demand from wartime customers - however over time things have begun to improve again with new housing developments being erected along Interstate 5 north of town (this area is now called Northgate) while heavy industry has slowly relocated back into Sunnyside proper due t its proximity to I-5/Lake Union/Seattle airport etcetera (and more recently development has sprung up around Pioneer Square).
