Sunnyside is located on State Route 530 east of the city of Spokane. According to the USGS National Geographic Names Database, Sunnyside was first named by Elijah Woods in 1847 after sun Goddess Nuns Helen and Martha from ancient Greece who had a summer home there. The post office at Sunnyside was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it closed on July 24, 1954. At that time, it served as the only post office in all of Spokane County. The first store opened on Main Street in Sunnyside in 1875; it was run by J.W. Fenton & Sons grocery store proprietors Hemanus Waddell and Lucius Ewing both natives of Scotland and early settlers hereabouts. They were joined about 1880 by James McKay (1859-1929), an American immigrant who came to work for them as a clerk before becoming a successful retail grocer/bakery owner and developer hereabouts throughout his life including most recently (1996) until his death as manager and general partner with wife Agnes McClure McKay of 38 years old at 6500 block North Meridian Street (later merged into Safeway). In 1896 alone he built or renovated two churches: First Presbyterian Church built on lot now occupied by Park Elementary School - still standing - then Second Presbyterian Church which replaced First Presbyterian building burned down many years earlier while serving as our current church - oldest extant structure west of I-80! That same year local newspaper also began publication herein using later name "Sunny Side News" with Ayesha Kenezick editor Also published therein until 1924 when ownership changed to Spokesman-Review Co., Ltd.; continued publication under new name "Spokane Evening News" until discontinued 1957 when ownership passed to Hearst Newspapers Incorporated.) Hutchins’s store opened adjacent thereto about 1905 continuing operations up through 1943 inclusive when Store #1 burned down leaving only Hutchins' garage surviving along side several other small businesses over time making this one long strip mall development unit from what used to be just 2 blocks east of SR 530 main street thru SUNNY SIDE growing ever more significant thru annexations hither & thither resulting finally today's community center complex comprising several buildings adjoining county government services complex immediately southwest corner thereof encompassing across entire site 3 school acres consisting presently Of 4 elementary schools 2 middle schools 1 high schoolcommercial park purposes includes Anheuser Busch Brewery site currently licensed for brewing beer for sale from keg
