Sunnyside was founded in 1892 by Jay Sprague and his wife Jennie Sprague as a log cabin community on the south bank of the Willamette River just east of present-day Sunnyside Park. Jennie Sprague was born in 1851 in Gansevoort Township, New York, and died in Sunnyside in 1906. Jay Sprague moved to Oregon from NY about 1870, settling in what is now Sunnyside. He had been born about 1850 also in Gansevoort Township, New York; his father being Knoepfel SamuelSprague (1824–1902), an American stockholder and first settler on Snake Island (now Klickitat Island). The first post office at Sunnyside opened on November 11, 1892. It was renamed Butte after General David Custer who fought with General Grant during the Mexican–American War playing an important role as aide de camp to Ulysses S. Grant that year; but it reverted back to its original name after only six months when mail started arriving from Butte too frequently for it to be worth maintaining a separate address for such a small town. By 1898 Sunnyside had 12 residents and employed one person as clerk/typist/bookkeeper/ druggist/ footman/butterfly keeper; by 1904 it had increased to 26 residents and employed two clerks plus three men as typists plus five housekeepers; by 1912 it had grown again to 38 residents employing four clerks plus seven men as typistsplus eight housekeepers while still employing one clerk as typist/bookkeeper+1 man ;In 1916 it became a city with its own mayor+2 council members . In 1924 City status was lost when Beaverton assumed control over all aspects of government within Washington County . Today little remains of formercity except for some remnants of downtown park which includes both public swimming pool (opened 1933)and tennis courts ,restaurant complexHomesite building 1925 built across from old school now used for storage & offices ;Today located insideue of new city limits adjacent street called "Sunny Side"

The Sunnyside School District was organized in 1923, followed by Sunnyside Park District in 1924. Sunnyside had a population of 6,000 people in 1930; it grew to 12,500 by 1940. The population peaked at 16,000 in 1960 before declining to 10,000 by 1970 due to gentrification and loss of jobs in the nearby National Mall area. In 2000, Sunnyside's population numbered 8,700 people according to the U.S. Census Bureau; this number has declined since then due to suburbanization and other factors
