Spokane is a small city in the Western United States. It was founded as an Indian trading post by Washington traders in 1853 and became a city after it was incorporated as a town in 1907. The Spokane Indians were the original residents of the area that is now Spokane, but they left in the early 1800s when their land was taken over by the U.S. government for military purposes. The first European to arrive in what is now Spokane was French explorer François Roussel who explored what is now British Columbia in 1792-93 before returning to France and dying there two years later. In 1853, American traders arrived at the present day site of Spokane and began trading with Native Americans who lived nearby. The town of Pullman was established nearby on Upper Cherry Creek while another new settlement called Nampa was founded on North River just south of downtown Spokane proper. By 1860, however, most of eastern Washington had been annexed by Oregon while western Montana Territory remained under US rule until it was ceded to Canada following World War II The first school opened in Gonzaga Township (now northcentral) Spokane on February 14, 1865 when tuition free public education began within 24 hours following passage of an Act entitled "An act for establishing schools throughout this state."
