In 1847, miners discovered gold near modern day Spokane Falls and began to troup there for prospecting purposes; this led to development around that location which included businesses such as hotels, mills and a sawmill built by James Watt in 1851 which powered an early electric lighting system in Spokane Valley. In 1886, Spokanese voters passed a local prohibition law that made it illegal for any person but whites to sell or produce liquor without getting government approval; this led to heavy drinking among Native American tribes who functioned primarily as social clubs during much of this period due to their lack of formalized alcohol regulation elsewhere in North America. In 1907–08,[1] construction began on Interstate 90 through central Spokane County and nearby townships[2] (including parts of today's Pierce County) with plans to connect Interstate 90 with the Pacific Northwest Expressway network via mainline freeway bridges across rivers like the Lewis and Clark Rivers eventually becoming reality; however these plans never came to fruition because severe floods damage many mainline highway bridges across major waterways shortly before I-90 was completed while also causing significant economic losses for southern Idaho businesses competing against northern Idaho business owners whose infrastructure had been largely unaffected.[3][4] As late as 1951,[5] one out every four residents employed someone within industries related directly or indirectly to aluminum production;[6] however all production stopped abruptly at Alcoa’s Hazel Creek smelter following an antitrust lawsuit brought against them by United States Steel Corporation (USSC) over pricing practices at their plants throughout most of 1946 – leading ultimately to metal prices reaching unprecedented levels during World War II.[7][8] Aluminum production restarted almost immediately following USSC's verdict but ceased again soon afterward due mainlyto worldwide wartime shortages caused by Germany's unconditional surrender![9][10][11][12]:
