When Spokane, Washington was founded in 1855, the town’s first target holders were two men who fashioned pieces of wood from a local tree. In 1934, the NRA established a permanent shooting range near what is now Eastern Market. The Spokane Shooting Range Association (SSLRA) was formed in 1949 and continues to operate today. The SSLRA played an important role in developing modern firearms safety standards for the region and has assisted with countless firearm related initiatives. Today, there are over 350 registered shooters at the Spokane Shooting Range Association facility including law enforcement officers, Olympic shooters, hunter/ fisherman, recreational shooters and more. Spokane is a city in Washington State, United States. The population was 37,819 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spokane County and part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Spokane was David Ritchie on July 24, 1855. He founded the town of Spokane on land he had purchased from Chief Joseph for $5 worth of goods and services. The first post office opened in Spokane on December 1, 1858. The Tillamook Treaty resulted in the cession by the Yakama Nation to Washington of all their lands east of the Cascade Mountains, including present-day Spokane County and much of adjacent Thurston County. After years of negotiation and conflict, this treaty was ratified by Congress on February 2, 1889 as The Indian Appropriations Act (Public Law 692). This act gave exclusive title to American Indian tribes to parcels totaling .(2) million acres (9 km²), which included much of eastern Washington Territory west of Vancouver Island. In 1906, Spokanans became citizens Of The United States through statehood ceremonies presided over by then-Governor John James Sieferling; they were not yet residents or counted as such in official statistics until 1907 when they were reclassified as "municipalities within boundaries" under state law. In 1912 residents voted to change their name to “Spokane” after a petition drive led by local attorney Clarence Jahnke and business man George Myers who also provided financial support for the campaign

Over time some Indians switched to Protestantism while others adopted more traditional Indian religions such as Dineh (the creator god). Eventually all but a few remaining Hidatsa chose to relocate westward when gold was discovered near Pullman in 1848; however most returned eastward after gold was exhausted thereabouts. Spokane was founded on December 3rd 1847 byCaptain George input King when he led an expedition up Snake Creek against Chief Joseph’s band of Cheyenne Indians nearby; without result so Captain King camped for night near present day Spokane Falls on December 4th 1847 with intention march next day further up Snake Creek only finding snow banks at high water mark today above Asotin Dam making future navigation difficult even using contemporary mapping! After night’s rest Captain king decided against continuing further upstream as weather conditions improved early next morning he made his way back downstream where he found flat bottom mudflats now dammed by Asotin Dam –Named after him as “King Flats” today! This event marked beginning of settlement and later growth & development for this area which would include main streets like Main Street & Fourth Avenue., etc…. In 1850 French Canadian trader Pierre Dorion reached this region from Vancouver via ferryboat landing on Tlingit Lake whereupon began trading goods with local natives including potash, flour and soapstone minerals among other items leading eventually to large land grants being given away through Treaty Of August 17th 1860 between US Government & Natives resulting in present-day Spokane County…..Notable Chiefs associated with early years includedChief Blackfeet Don Carlos Brougham (& wife) Mission Jailer1851-1854 & Chief Seattle James Halliday 1865-1871…..First European settler(s) –On July 6th 1852 Capt John Crampton landed at what is now Point Defiance Bayou opposite present day White Rapids Landing Site upon his vessel The brig Quebec under charter from Lord Liverpool…US Army detachment commanded by Major George Armstrong arriveddatedJuly 8th 1852 & immediately set about building Fort Snelling……..Blackfeet nation under pressure from United States over treaty negotiations prior to wagon trains arriving February 1st 1850 begins raiding settlements throughout upper Columbia River Gorge starting January 25th 1850……………. initial construction work done at fort includes erection of first sod house October 16th 1852 followed by first stockade May 15th 1853……and first store November 10th 1853……………. major military action occurring January 25th 506 involving General Phillip Sheridan resulted in Battle Of Little Big Horn……… over 30 dead Americans lost including 7 officers casualties…………….
