The party was composed of Captains David Thompson and George Vancouver, Lieutenant William Rodgers (later Governor), two guides/mules Alfred Hitchcock and John Astor IV,arters James McLoughlin, Joshua Lickliter (the future Mayor), four Indian chiefs-Crow Dog (Hahkwajehais),(Sioux), Snake Town (Wapatoa), Nez Perce Chief Wenuska-and three white men: Captain Fenton’s assistant Drury Rogers Captain Cook departed Fort Astoria on September 17th with his crew of 22 aboard the Discovery under Commandant Elisha Peake to explore Northwestern Canada and make new contacts with aboriginal peoples he had not encountered before while exploring inland waterways near Hudson Bay or along the route proposed by Pierre Dorion for France across North America “to find a passage to China through this continent” as reported by Captain Cook himself after returning from his voyage which ended at Stromboli on December 14th 1810 with no discovery whatever to substantiate such an undertaking! When news arrived back at Astoria that a great body of water lay between us and Japan [Lake Tahoe] all eyes were turned towards this vast riches but we found nothing! We abandoned our enterprise hereabouts & returned home…. Onlookers were taken aback when Captain Cook first sighting Nisqually Rapids about eight miles east upriver from where he anchored off shore about February 12th 1806 observed “a large floe lying upon its bed nearly within reach” The rapids would later be named after him - Robert Fulton Falls Roaring Rapids Aftermath
