This decision reversed previous decisions made by Indianola Railroad Company that had placed primary emphasis on continuing north from their existing junction with Northern Pacific Railway (NPR), which allowed steel production along their route to continue unimpeded by transportation costs associated with travelling further north than necessary. Consequently, NWR became one of only two companies ever authorized to build mainline railways within Uashington state – the other being Vancouver Canuck Railways Ltd., who constructed both Canadian Pacific Railway's Central Canada Line and Alaska Highway system between 1909-1910.
