During World War II: In 1942, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor killing more than 2,500 Americans nationals including 140 children under 10 years old - many were Jewish refugees like four-time winner of Olympic gold medal Babe Ruth - American citizens across all levels mobilized to support our country through mobilization drives such as "I Believe" or "4 Corners." Businesses closed early that day with no warning to employees or customers about potential hostilities ahead. Many people had nothing else to do so they went into work without knowing what lay ahead... war was upon us! After Pearl Harbor: president Franklin D Roosevelt called Congress into session on December 6th 1942 to authorize appropriations for war purposes and provide leadership for legislation needed to prepare for war effort such as lend-lease programs that would provide help To our allies while we were at war.... [This] led directly to later decisions about military strategy after Japan attacked China..... President Roosevelt then signed Executive Order 98001 on February 22nd 1943 which authorized production quotas for Boeing Aircraft plants within 7 days just prior to their anticipated delivery date..... This order created ruckus throughout Seattle because Boeing expected orders from Army Air Forces units stationed there......Many people believed that this order would lead directly to Japanese surrender because aircraft produced by Seattle's Boeing plants could have been used against our own troops overseas......... Unfortunately this did not happen but instead Japanese forces surrendered at Iwo Jima less than two weeks later....... Spokanese residents played an important role in helpingrailway traffic thru Iwo Jima until it was liberated by U.S forces on April 15th 1945.......... Today many local businesses still operate out there......... In total over 1 million men and women served their country during World War II....... Even today tens of thousands remain unaccountedfor......Today hundreds if not thousands continue their community service despite being ineligible for federal benefits
