Spokane has a rich history that goes back over 160 years. It was founded in 1851 as an agricultural town on the Snake River. In 1907, Spokane became the first city in Northwest Territory to be created from land split off from Tacoma. The name Spokane comes from Spokanee (a local Native American tribe), which means "Place of the Chiefs." The town had been known as Grantville since it was laid out by Captain James A. Grant in 1851. At first, Grantsville was small and only consisted of his home and barns; but it grew rapidly due to its location on the Snake River and its access to irrigation water not too far away. By 1860, Grantsville had become a thriving community with a store, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, Masonic Lodge #1 (the first lodge ever chartered in what is now Spokane), churches (two German Lutheran churches were built within two years of each other), and a few homes for farmers who used up all their available water resources during winter months when there wasn’t much else to do downriver. Grant Avenue – also named after General James A. Grant – runs through today’s downtown Spokane parallel to railroad tracks that once served as streetscape until they were replaced by light rail lines thirty years ago today! When Expo ‘88 hit town square – then Nationwide Plaza just east of Kootenai Avenue – most everyone converged onto 4th Ave., now part of University Way NE., for what turned into one of America’s largest street fairs ever staged outdoors! There were midway games, carnival rides including Ferris wheels and saw mills dating back several decades prior; food booths representing everything from buffalo chicken dip to chocolate chip cookies; arts & crafts galleries displaying beautiful Indian blankets and baskets made entirely out of natural materials…the list could go on forever! Notable participants include Mayor John Enger (1925-27) who spearheaded aggressive redevelopment efforts starting with creating Pioneer Square park; Draya Shearer Greene (born 1947) CEO/President & Founder/CEO Of First Interstate Bancorp who led development around Main Street SW between 3rd Ave./Everett St.–now home to Starbucks–and 2nd Ave./Shaw Blvd.; Lester Thurow Sr., Seattle mayor 1966-1973&1975-1978&1989-1993&1995-1997&1999 owner & operator/founder Of The grunge music ClubXS Lounge which played concerts outdoors every night outside before dawn or going indoors until 10pm or 11pm depending on how many shows he did that weeknight; Vern Cotterman manager The Woody Guthrie House Museum which reopened in fall 2009 after being closed for 5+ years In 1907 however things began changing quickly for Spokane when Govt Land Management District No 1 opened up lands west of Tacoma along the Columbia River Gorge between Cheney Road NW and Yesler Highway NW giving rise to what would eventually become Eastern Washington State College and Interurban Railway System Station adjacent today's Chinook Park area Although originally intended only for agriculture purposes no logging took place within this area until 1913 when an agreement was reached with King County whereby lumbering rights along both sides of I-5 would be reserved upstream making way for urban growth without harming cultural resources associated with these ancient forests Please see: http://www2 .spokanewashingtonhistory .org /about_spokane_washington_city/. Spokane was founded in 1857 by the Spokane Indians. The first white people to live in Spokane arrived in 1859 when George Armstrong Custer and his unit of the U.S. Cavalry explored the area and found a site for a trading post. The first store opened in 1861, and Spokane became an important local town. In 1868, the city was renamed Spokane Falls after its most famous resident, James Wacoupski, who had helped found the city. In 1907, Spokane Falls became the capital of Washington Territory; it remained that way until 1959 when it was moved to Seattle.
