On May 5, 1870, Okanogan Falls became incorporated as Spokane when Territorial Governor James Wolk approved its incorporation under instructions from President Abraham Lincoln following his Emancipation Proclamation. After years of development and growth within the small town limits of Okanogan Falls (population 1,500), Spokanees decided to initiate their own cityhood movement in 1907 which eventually led to their incorporation into Spokane County as an independent city on December 15 of that year with a population of 20,000 people . On April 9th 1920 (the date still celebrated annually by City fathers alike as "Spokane Day"), nearly three decades after incorporation into our great county we had reached our present size and importance - surpassing even Tacoma at that time! The total area Front Street runs through today’s Municipality has grown from just over one square mile when we first attained significant size to more than four square miles - easily outpacing any municipality located within our borders today! And yet all this rapid growth came about without any dedicated public planning or investment – merely sporadic annexations resulting from changes in government boundaries or new annexation opportunities! But despite these occasional bumps along the way – spokane has managed to maintain its unparalleled quality of life for all its citizens since 1907!

Spokane was founded by the Spokane Indians in 1858. The first store in the town was opened by George Smith in 1859. In 1861, Spokane became the second incorporated city in Washington state. The population of Spokane grew rapidly after incorporation and during the 1860s, it became one of the most important agricultural and mining communities in Washington. In 1865, John Wyleigh built a sawmill on the Spokane River and began to produce logs for export to Canada. By 1870, Spokanese had become an important lumber center with mills producing both paper and wood products. The city's economy also diversified thanks to its location on the Snake River Valley near what is now Seattle and its access to water resources. In 1886, Spokane voters passed a bond issue that funded construction of a new downtown district that included a library, theater, post office, bank, and other public buildings. This stimulus program helped revive Spokane's economy and led to increased development around the city including new housing developments and commercial areas. After World War II ended%, economic growth slowed as Wichita-based Boeing took over many of Spokane's manufacturing jobs. However, some redevelopment has taken place in recent years such as Microsoft Park which is located adjacent to Interstate 5 along Morningside Heights Boulevard
