Spokane, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of Spokane County. The population was 269,824 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Cascade Mountains and is bordered by Clark County to its south, Lake Superior to its east, and Kittitas County to its north. Spokane is also surrounded by about 25 miles (40 km) of non-motorized trails that offer opportunities for hiking, biking, skiing, snowboarding, and fishing. The city has been a center for agricultural production since it was founded in 1879 as a mining town on the Spokane River. Today's economy largely relies on services such as social service agencies, retailers, restaurants and construction companies. The first Europeans to visit what is now Spokane were Catholic missionaries working in what is now Oregon during Father Gabriel Orozco's mission trip in 1847-48. In 1851 they reachedpresent-day Spokane on horseback from Fort Nez Perce due westward along present day Interstate 10 near present day Cheneyville before continuing their journey overland across Stevens Pass into British Columbia via Gold Rush country The first towns established in what is now Spokane were Frenchtown (1854), Post Falls (1859), Butte (1861), Mission (1863), North Bend (1867), Moses Lake (1868), Forks Township(1877), Hallstadt(1901) and Grays Harbor Borough(1911). The original area where modern-day Spokane stands was inhabited by several tribes of Native Americans including the Natives who called it "Moccasin Point". They built permanent lodges there around 1776 when they arrived from Eastern Canada after separating from other Algonquian Nation groups led by Chief Oto: "Otter" or "Great Chief." The land that would become downtown was surveyed in 1879 by Captain James Waddell with help from local fur trader George Coeur de Lassus who had purchased some land adjacent to today's University District at Puget Sound; this included most of which would later be developed into downtown core including much of what still exists today within 100 blocks or so limits centered around Second Avenue South between Broadway and E Street Northwest - bounded originally only by First Avenue North Upper Main Street extended northeast from Seventh Avenue Northwest to Railroad Avenue Northwest; this route served as an early transportation corridor connecting downtown with farms near Interstate 5 outside Seattle

In 1881–1882 four brothers founded Eastern Western Electric Cooperative which later became Northwest Electric Power Company (NEPO). NEPO built three substations: one at Whatcom Falls on Hennessy Creek north of Seattle; another at Moses Lake on renamed North Fork Gold Rush Road between Moses Lake and Pullman; and a third substation at Cheney along Snake River just south of Cheney Dam today’s Woodlawn Drive across from US Route 801/US Route 99 Easton Avenue NE from Cheney National Wildlife Refuge today's White Sands Drive NE from those facilities according to their website www2 . nepo held elections for directors every two years through 1922 when it merged into Public Service Broadcasting Corporation effective November 1st that year . In 1935 there were efforts by both NEPO owners Fred Ladd (founder) and future state legislator Harry Reid to have all power grids interconnected using high-voltage transmission lines but these failed due primarily to funding shortages within Public Service Broadcasting Corporation caused by World War II . The first permanent Europeans to visit what is now Spokane were fur traders and missionaries from Russia in 1853, who named it after Saint Petersburg, Russia. The town was founded by General George Canby on December 12, 1855 as Canby City after his victory at the Battle of Lake Batura against Native American forces near today's Interstate 90. It became an incorporated town on January 1, 1903. On February 14, 1912 the name change for Spokane County from Indian Territory to Washington County due to renaming by then-governor Theodore Roosevelt as part of his New Frontier program.
