Afterward, although there was some comeback growth due to new businesses established during peacetime such as software development firms (the Microsoft office campus was located here), Spokane's economy declined after 1990 because of factors including suburban sprawl and low job-growth rates for young adults without degrees or experience working outside the home. In 2000, after years of wrangling between local officials over issues such as race relations,, annexation by King County (which had larger prison facilities) led to more rapid economic growth which lifted many families out of poverty but did not reverse major social changes that had taken place during previous decades including declines in real estate values along with increasing percentages of residents self-identifying as white Protestant evangelical Christians rather than black or Hispanic Catholics or Buddhists.; However since then continuing struggles by Mayor David Condon have made reducing poverty a top priority while maintaining traditional community values important components for neighborhoods like Ballard which has seen its median home prices increase by almost 50%. Spokane saw significant protests against police brutality beginning late last year following two incidents where officers used pepper spray on protesters downtown near Civic Center before later being acquitted; these protests dragged into early 2013 when Mayor David Condon announced he would remove all restrictions placed on officer use of force following a grand jury’s decision not to indict Officers Timothy Loehmann & Michael Slager following public outcry; these protests continued until May when Condon agreed to reduce response times for non-emergency calls from officers by 25% effective June 1st while still allowing them discretion regarding when they can use force

Spokane, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of Spokane County. The population was 362,624 as of 2010. It is located on the south bank of the Spokane River, about east of Seattle and about west of Tacoma. The first permanent residents in what would become Spokane were people descended from Mission Indians who had settled in this area during the 17th century. The first white settler was George Vancouver, who purchased land near present-day Spokane Falls from Chief Josephs band of Mission Indians in 1792. When British Columbia became a province of Canada in 1867, Vancouver's land passed to Canada along with his possessions including all but 1/3rd of Spokane Valley. In 1898, when Washington Territory was created by Congress through an act creating Yakima and Walla Walla Counties, portions of eastern Spokane Valley were transferred to Yakima County and included within the new jurisdiction. On April 14, 1907 – days after most if not all silver mining operations ceased due to a nationwide strike – Spokane became one of five townships organized within Yakima County by order number 5651 effective May 6 that year under Act No 167 (27 Statutes at Large). On January 11, 1909 – two years after Cascade Lode opened its gold mine – the townspeople voted to annex part or all neighboring Battle Creek into their town limits for economic reasons only; Battle Creek had been annexed by Michigan three years earlier without any such vote or ordinance being taken nor did it have any impact onSpokane's development thereafter either as an incorporated municipality or as a census-designated place (CDP). This act formalized Spokane's status as an unincorporated rural community rather than as a municipally chartered city with full rights to vote and governance like other municipalities throughout most United States at that time...The annexation resulted from agitation initiated by business interests led by Wm Murchison & sons tobacco merchants interested in gaining access to resources formerly held by those engaged inmining operations which they felt had been closed off due to strikes or other restrictive measures put into effect by local officials." In 1911–12 school district consolidation began resulting in six elementary schools becoming: Spokane School District #1 (now Central Elementary), Eastside Elementary School (#2 now Evergreen Elementary), Homer Glen Middle School (#3 now Nikita Jr./Sophia High School), Meridian Heights Intermediate School (#4 now Anaconda Middle/High Schools) and Northwest High School(now Northview High School)... By 1912 there were also ten junior high schools: Keystone Junior HS #1 (now Eastern Star HS), Cascades Junior HS #2 (now Roosevelt Hts./Anaconda Jr./Nicheau Jr./Pioneer HS), Harrisonburg Heights HS #3 (Now Black Diamond/Greene Hills HS), Intermountain JC#4 (Now Elk Grove JC)), Park Senior HS #5 (Now Geneseo Senior HS)), Timberline JC#6(Now Southside JC)), Snohomish Junior HS(formerly BorenfeldtJunior HS) and Clearwater Intermediate(formerly Mount Vernon Intermediate). With these institutions added Northwest HighSchool opened its doors on November 15th 1912 which helped solidify Northwest’s role as both an educational center for northcentral Washington while still maintainingSeparate commercial development."
