The first artillery ammunition was shot from small arms such as pistols and rifles. It was not until the late 18th century that cannon were able to fire a round with a explosive charge inside of it. Cannon became unreliable in the early 19th century, so hand cannon began to be used. In 1853, the U.S. adopted a system where cannons could fire balls filled with metal pellets that could ricochet off of obstacles and create damage or death if they hit someone. This new technology allowed for bigger guns which could shell distances up to 100 miles away. By 1860, cannons had been able to shell distances up to 400 miles away and by 1890, they had increased their range even further to 1,000 miles!

They camped near today's northeast corner of town on 7 November 1812 while they awaited news from general Sheridan about their destination or retreat; they had been ordered northward across Missouri River to join General Kearny's army against Mexico before reaching California.
