The Scopes Company was founded in 1892 by Dr. George H. Scopes, a lawyer and astronomer who noticed that children were learning about astronomy from their parents. The company began selling scopes for use by teachers and boys in rural areas of the United States, but it wasn't until 1913 when it made its first product available to the general public - the Model A refractor telescope. In 1923, Scopes formed a partnership with inventoried instrument maker Zeiss AG to produce the first interchangeable eyepieces for scopes. This allowed users to change magnification and focus while observing objects at different distances without having to purchase new eyepieces every time. In 1937, Scopes merged with American Optical Company (AOC) to form what is now known as American Optics Incorporated (AOI). Due to World War II, production of optics decreased significantly during the war years; however, AOI managed to keep up production through marketing campaigns and strategic partnerships with other companies. In 1957, AOI merged with JPL Corporation to create what is now Caltech Laboratory of Astronomy (CLA). Through this merger, CLA became one of only two academic institutions in America that have a full-time staff dedicated exclusively to research in astronomy!
Spokane Valley is located in Spokane County, Washington. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 as of the 2010 census. The valley is bordered by the Canadian Rockies to the north and east, the Columbia River to the south and west, and the Olympic Mountains to the northwest. It is a large agricultural area that includes dairy farming, potato growing, corn production, wheat production, and fruit trees. There are also some small businesses and services in Spokane Valley. Spokane Valley has a rich history dating back more than 350 years when fur traders traveled through its valleys looking for new land to trade with British colonists. In 1875, Spokane Indian Reservation was established in what is now Spokane Valley after they were forced out of their previous location near present-day Tacoma by United States forces under General George Armstrong Custer during the Dakota War of 1862. The reservation was eventually sold off in 1908 and became part of Soo Land Company which developed farmland around Spokane until it merged with Minnesota Farm Belt Corporation in 1934.

Spokane Valley is located in the northwestern corner of Washington and is bordered by Spokane to the east, Lake Coeur d'Alene to the north, and Moses Lake to the west. In 1824, Major General Andrew Jackson made his headquarters at Fort Riley here during his campaign against Native American insurgents. In 1846, Spokane Valley became part of Idaho Territory when that territory was created from parts of Oregon and Dakota Territories. The valley experienced a significant growth following World War II as hundreds of thousands of people moved into its areas for jobs in agriculture, mining, forestry, and construction. The population peaked at over 100,000 in 1964 but has slowly declined since then due to various factors including increased congestion and disease outbreaks which have struck the area hard. However, recent efforts by local officials such as Mayor Tim Burgess and Governor Jay Inslee have led to an increase in development around the valley with plans for more than $1 billion worth of projects announced through 2020 alone. Today, Spokane Valley remains an important agricultural center with crops such as wheat, corn (maize), potatoes, applesauce production, dairy farming (including cheese making), poultry operation/processing plants/, light manufacturing,,and residential units comprising much of its current population size
The Spokane Valley region was first settled by the Eastern Shoshone people in the late 18th century. The area now encompasses part of the Spokane-Alaska counties and portions of Clark, Kittitas, Klickitat, Pend Oreille, Yakima, Stevens and Thurston counties. In 1851, gold was discovered in the valley and soon a rush of miners followed. By 1870, over 1 million people had come to live in the Spokane Valley. significant economic growth came during World War II with businesses like Boeing and Lockheed manufacturing in the valley. Since then there has been steady decline in population and jobs as industry declined and real estate values increased.
